An update to our successful Peer meet up
Pathways to Independence: An update
Pathways to Independence is a collaboration between BCITS and Individualized Funding Resource Centre (IFRC). The purpose was to create a peer group which will discuss issues of interest brought forward by members of the group. The first meeting focused on the Choice in Supports for Independent Living [CSIL] Program while the second meeting featured a demonstration of voice activated technology available from BCITS’ Technology for Independent Living (TIL) Program. This presentation was followed by a CSIL questions and solutions discussion led by Paul Gauthier. The group is facilitated by Paul Gauthier and Chris Hofley from IFRC.
From the outset it was felt that this is a safe space to discuss private issues and it has been decided at this point in time not to broadcast the discussions via internet or other video conferencing channels.
The meet up very quickly turned into a familiar, welcoming and very friendly event. It is as informative as it is enjoyable for the 17 to 25 participants (and there is always room for more!) Topics for discussion originate with the peers as much as they are also the partakers in them. If there is a request to bring in professionals who can speak to a chosen topic, the facilitator will try to make it happen. This peer group offers members a great opportunity to make new friends and become involved with a network of similar minded people who face similar obstacles. Coffee breaks and light snacks are offered.
Pathways to Independence is a pilot project of four sessions. The last two remaining sessions take place Monday 9th July and Monday 13th August at 12.15pm -3.00pm in the Hall of the Sunset Community Centre, 6810 Main Street, Vancouver. If you come by car, please come early. While there is some street parking and also a car park behind the Centre, construction work at the back of the building may mean participants will need additional time to find a good parking spot.
