International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2018
On December 3rd we will observe the International Day of Disabled Persons.
This year’s theme focuses on empowering persons with disabilities for an inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Historically, the United Nations proclaimed 1981 as the ‘International Year of Disabled Persons’. However, the UN recognized soon that more work was needed than could be accomplished in one year and 1981 was followed by the ‘Decade of Disabled Persons’ (1983-1993.)
Here you can find an account of the evolution of Persons with Disabilities towards a barrier-free society, entitled, ‘The United Nations and Disability: 70 years of the work towards a more inclusive world’.
In 1992 the United Nations proclaimed December 3rd as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is meant to be a day where communities, groups, governments and non-profit organizations celebrate overcoming barriers and put emphasis on abilities.
Shining a spot-light on the issues pertaining to persons with disabilities, raising awareness, reflecting on the past and focusing on the future is what the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is all about. You can find out about some events put on in the Lower Mainland by visiting Project Everybody.
It is important to get informed and be a part of any change. What better way to come together and celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
