Automatic Door Opener FAQs

TIL aims to make the ADO application process as easy as possible. After receiving your application, we will request videos and pictures of you accessing your current door. A TIL technician will review your submission. Based on their review and the information provided in your application, TIL will make a decision. If approved, we will coordinate with an ADO installer to complete the installation.

TIL’s ADO program has limited funding, which means we cannot provide ADOs to everyone who applies. The program is designed to assist those who are most in need of an ADO—members who cannot access their doors or face significant difficulty doing so and lack the funding to purchase their own ADO.

Individuals who may not be approved for an ADO through TIL include, but are not limited to:

  • Those who can access their door with little difficulty.
  • Those who can fund their own ADO.
  • Those who cannot provide videos or pictures of their current door access.
  • Those planning to move in the near future (applications can be put on hold until the move is complete).
  • Those who do not obtain approval from building managers or landlords for ADO installation.

If approved for a TIL-funded ADO, TIL will coordinate with an ADO company to install an ADO free of charge. TIL does not provide funding for repairs or transfers of ADOs.
Due to limited funding, members will only be provided one (1) ADO through the TIL ADO program.

Due to limited funding, TIL does not cover the following costs:

  • Repairs to ADOs (warranty coverage is provided by the ADO installer).
  • Transfer of ADOs to a new location if the member moves.

If the applicant actively participates in the process, approval can be completed quickly. However, TIL does not control the timeline for the ADO company’s installation, as it depends on factors such as part availability, installer availability, and potential electrical work.

TIL will only install an ADO on one (1) door that the applicant uses to enter or exit their home or suite. TIL does not provide ADOs for multiple doors, apartment complex doors, parking garage doors, etc.

Due to limited funding and the need to prioritize those most in need, TIL asks applicants building a new home to include the cost of an ADO in their construction budget. While building a new home is expensive, the inclusion of an ADO is considered a minimal additional cost.

Once the ADO is installed, TIL technicians will assist you in accessing it. Most members cannot use the provided FOB, but access can be enabled through an accessibility switch (various types available), an app, or voice control.

While it is possible to use a smart lock with an ADO, TIL strongly discourages it, as improper use could cause damage and incur high repair costs. For example, operating the ADO while the door is locked can damage the ADO motor.
Typically, a smart lock is unnecessary because the door automatically remains locked when not in use.

No, TIL will not cover the cost of transferring an ADO. The TIL ADO program funds installation only. Members must contact the ADO company directly and pay for any repairs or transfers. For this reason, we recommend applying for a TIL-funded ADO only when you are certain you won’t be moving in the near future.

TIL will provide only one (1) ADO per approved applicant. If the member moves or the ADO becomes damaged or faulty, it is the member’s responsibility to repair or replace it.

No. If two applicants live in the same household, TIL will provide only one ADO for the residence. However, as long as both residents are TIL members, individualized access methods can be provided for each member.

TIL-funded ADOs work only on in-swing or out-swing doors, not sliding doors. The ADO company will have the final say on whether the ADO is suitable for the requested door.

Yes. The ADO company will provide two (2) keys for the new lock included with the ADO. It is the member’s responsibility to ensure spare keys are available for their care team.

No, TIL will not provide additional keys for a TIL-funded ADO. The ADO company will supply two (2) keys at the time of installation. If the member requires more spare keys, it is their responsibility to obtain them.

While a keypad can be used with a smart lock, it cannot be used directly with the ADO. However, if the member requires access to the ADO through an app, access can be shared with the care team with the member’s approval.
